Alumni Information

The McNair Scholars Program at Michigan State University continues to offer new and expanded services to our scholars and the results have been phenomenal. The primary goal of McNair is to increase the number of underrepresented students who pursue and complete graduate doctoral education, with the expectation that they will become college professors.

Approximately 1,000 students have participated in the McNair Scholars Program at Michigan State University since 1986. Data based on the 2003 MSU McNair alumni survey show that 99% of program alumni have graduated with a post-baccalaureate degree.

Twenty-three percent of the alumni are currently enrolled in master’s degree programs while 15% are enrolled in Ph.D. granting programs.  Another 10% of the program alumni are enrolled in a professional degree program.

Data showed that 24% of the respondents have graduated with a master’s degree and another 4% have obtained a Ph.D. degree.  Respondents also reported obtaining professional degrees, this figure represents 6% of the degrees earned. 

Comparing these outcomes to the National McNair Alumni Survey, 2002, it is demonstrated that the MSU McNair Program is advancing toward the goal of getting more underrepresented students through the graduate studies pipeline. 

Data, from the Department of Education, illustrate that of those participants who completed a degree, 95% earned a bachelor’s degree, 16% earned a master’s degree, and another 2% received a doctoral degree or some other terminal degree.

MSU McNair Program is achieving at a faster rate than the average McNair Program nationwide.
